Every great journey begins with a single moment that changes everything. For us, that moment was watching our beautiful Sri Lankan coastline choke on billions of plastic pellets from the X-Press Pearl disaster. It was a moment of profound heartbreak, but also one of incredible clarity. We realized that waiting for others to act was no longer an option. This blog, ‘Our Green Quest,’ is our response. It’s a story born from ashes and ocean spray, a promise to turn our shared sorrow into collective, positive action. This is not just our story; it’s an invitation to be part of a new beginning.
A Wake-Up Call We Couldn’t Ignore
The fire on the X-Press Pearl was more than just a news headline; it was a symptom of a much larger illness. For years, we had watched, concerned but often distant, as stories of environmental damage filled our screens—melting ice caps, island-sized garbage patches, and collapsing ecosystems. But this time, it was different. This was our home. We saw the nurdles, like toxic snow, blanketing the golden beaches we grew up on. We read the reports of dead sea turtles and dolphins washing ashore. We felt the despair of the fishing communities whose livelihoods vanished overnight.
That helplessness was a powerful catalyst. It forced us to look inward and ask a difficult question: How did we get here? The answer wasn’t just in a single ship’s accident, but in the millions of small, unconscious choices we all make every single day. The plastic we use without a second thought, the products we buy, and the waste we create all contribute to a global system that is straining our planet to its breaking point.

Our mission is to be your guide and companion on this journey, transforming the overwhelming feeling of “what can I possibly do?” into a series of small, manageable, and impactful actions.

Meet the Person Behind the Quest
My name is Madushanka Fernando, and I’m the founder of Our Green Quest. I’m not a scientist or a full-time activist. I’m just someone who believes that we have a shared responsibility to protect the beautiful world we inhabit. After witnessing the X-Press Pearl disaster, I felt a deep need to channel my frustration into something positive. This blog is my way of doing that—of learning, sharing, and growing alongside a community that cares. My goal is to make this journey feel less intimidating and more like an exciting adventure we are all on together.
